Waterproof vs Water-Resistant Safety Shoes: What to Pick for Wet Work

Waterproof and water-resistant sound interchangeable. They are not, and choosing wrong in a wet workplace means wet feet, discomfort and eventually foot problems. Here is the difference and how to decide.

Water-resistant: slows water down

A water-resistant upper, often marked WRU or S2 under EN ISO 20345, is treated leather or a tightly woven synthetic that resists absorption. Light rain and splashes bead off. In heavy rain or standing water, water eventually gets through.

Waterproof: keeps water out

A waterproof shoe has a membrane, often a breathable polymer layer, bonded inside the upper. Water cannot pass through it under normal use conditions. These are marked WR in the standard, and they are the right choice for work in standing water, heavy rain or outdoor winter conditions.

How to choose

  • Outdoor construction sites in rainy climates: waterproof.
  • Indoor work with occasional splashes: water-resistant is sufficient and usually more breathable.
  • Food processing with frequent washdowns: waterproof with a washable upper, or water-resistant with very good drainage and quick-drying properties depending on the workflow.
  • Cold storage: waterproof, to keep moisture out and preserve insulation performance.

The trade-off to know about

Waterproof membranes reduce breathability slightly. In hot indoor environments where the only water risk is a splash, a fully waterproof boot can feel hotter than a water-resistant one. Match the protection level to the actual hazard rather than buying the highest rating by default.

Care matters for both

Water-resistant uppers benefit from re-treatment over time. Waterproof membranes can be damaged by punctures or by letting the shoe dry next to heat. Our guide to cleaning and maintaining safety shoes covers the routines that keep both types working.
